Observer Reactivity

Observer Reactivity refers to a type of measurement error that occurs when an observer’s behavior changes because they are aware that their data collection and observations are being monitored or evaluated by others. This awareness can lead to conscious or unconscious adjustments in how the observer records behaviors, potentially skewing the data.

Example

If a teacher knows that the principal is reviewing the accuracy of their behavioral observations in the classroom, they might be more likely to pay extra attention and record fewer instances of student misbehavior than they would under normal circumstances. This could result in an inaccurate reflection of the students’ typical behavior patterns.
