Forward Chaining is a teaching method used in behavior analysis where the first step in a behavior chain is taught and reinforced first. After mastering the first step, the learner is taught the second step, and so on, until the entire sequence of behaviors is completed. Each step in the chain builds upon the previous one, allowing the learner to progress sequentially through the task.
Example
A teacher is teaching a student how to tie their shoes using forward chaining. The teacher first focuses on teaching the student how to cross the laces and pull them tight. Once the student masters this step, the teacher introduces the next step of forming loops with the laces. Gradually, the entire sequence is taught, with each new step added only after the previous step is mastered.
