Behavior Chain

Definition

Behavior Chain is a sequence of specific, discrete behaviors that are linked together to form a complex action. Each behavior in the chain serves as both a response to the previous step and a cue (stimulus) for the next step. The chain leads to a terminal behavior or outcome, where reinforcement is provided after the last step in the sequence.

Example

Teaching a child to wash their hands involves a behavior chain. The steps include turning on the faucet, wetting their hands, applying soap, scrubbing their hands, rinsing the soap off, turning off the faucet, and drying their hands. Each of these behaviors is a link in the chain, and the child must complete each step in order to successfully complete the entire task. Reinforcement (e.g., praise or a reward) is delivered once the entire hand-washing routine is completed correctly.
