Direct Functional Behavior Assessment

A Direct Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a method used to observe and record a behavior in real-time within the natural environment. The goal is to identify the function of the behavior by directly observing its occurrences and the environmental factors (antecedents and consequences) that are influencing it. This method provides data on how often, when, and under what conditions the behavior happens.

Example

A student frequently leaves their seat during class. A behavior analyst observes the student across several class periods and records:

  • Antecedent: The teacher gives an instruction to begin work.
  • Behavior: The student leaves their seat.
  • Consequence: The teacher tells the student to sit back down, but the student avoids starting work for a few minutes.
