Time Delay Prompt Fading

Time Delay Prompt Fading is a teaching technique in which the time between the presentation of a natural stimulus and the delivery of a prompt is gradually increased. This allows the learner more opportunity to respond independently before the prompt is given, helping them transition from prompted responses to unprompted ones.

Example

When teaching a child to identify colors, the teacher first shows a red card and immediately provides the correct verbal prompt, “red.” As the child begins to learn, the teacher gradually increases the time between showing the card and giving the prompt, giving the child a chance to name the color independently before the prompt is provided.
