Negative Reinforcement

Negative Reinforcementย occurs when an aversive stimulus is removed from the environment following aย behavior, which increases or maintains the future probability of thatย behaviorย occurring.

Example

An example ofย negative reinforcementย is when a child completes their homework to avoid being scolded by a parent. The removal of the scolding (an aversive stimulus) reinforces the childโ€™sย behaviorย of completing homework, making it more likely to occur in the future.
