Definition
Negative Reinforcement occurs when an aversive stimulus is removed from the environment following a behavior, which increases or maintains the future probability of that behavior occurring.
Example
An example of negative reinforcement is when a child completes their homework to avoid being scolded by a parent. The removal of the scolding (an aversive stimulus) reinforces the child’s behavior of completing homework, making it more likely to occur in the future.
