Habituation

Habituation is a process in which an individual’s response to a stimulus decreases after repeated exposure to that stimulus. Over time, the individual becomes accustomed to the stimulus, and their reaction becomes less intense or disappears altogether. Habituation occurs naturally and is common in situations where a stimulus is not harmful or meaningful after repeated exposure.

Example

A person moves to a new home near a train station. Initially, they are disturbed by the sound of trains passing by and find it hard to sleep. However, after living there for a few weeks, the sound of the trains no longer bothers them, and they can sleep through the noise. This reduction in their response to the noise is an example of habituation.
