Contingent Exercise is a behavior reduction strategy where a learner is required to perform a physical activity as a consequence of engaging in a problem behavior. The exercise is not topographically related to the problem behavior but serves as a form of punishment intended to reduce the likelihood of the behavior recurring.
Example
A student repeatedly talks out of turn during class. As a consequence, the teacher implements contingent exercise, requiring the student to do ten push-ups each time they disrupt the class. The push-ups are not related to the talking behavior but are used as a deterrent, with the goal of decreasing the student’s interruptions.
