Behavior Chain Interruption Strategy (BCIS)

The Behavior Chain Interruption Strategy (BCIS) is a teaching technique used to disrupt a learned sequence of behaviors (a behavior chain) to encourage the learner to engage in a new, desired behavior. By interrupting the chain, the learner is prompted to complete the behavior using a new response or skill.

Example:

If a child is independently following a behavior chain to make a sandwich (taking out bread, adding peanut butter, etc.), the teacher might interrupt the process by removing the jar of peanut butter. The child must then request the peanut butter to continue the chain, thus teaching or reinforcing a new communication skill (requesting).
