Stimulus Generalization

Stimulusย Generalizationย occurs when aย behaviorย that is learned in the presence of oneย stimulusย also occurs in the presence of a different, but similar,ย stimulus. This process allows behaviors to transfer across different contexts or environments without additional training.

Example

A child learns to say โ€œdogโ€ when they see their familyโ€™s pet dog. Later, the child says โ€œdogโ€ when they see other dogs in the neighborhood, even though they are different breeds and sizes. This showsย stimulusย generalization, as theย behaviorย of saying โ€œdogโ€ occurs inย responseย to similar, though not identical, stimuli.
