Self-monitoring

Self-monitoring is a behavior change strategy in which an individual observes and records their own behavior as it occurs, often using a tracking system like a chart or checklist. By increasing awareness of their actions, individuals can improve or regulate their behavior through feedback and reflection. This strategy is commonly used in behavior modification programs to help individuals take control of their behaviors and monitor progress toward goals.

Example

A student who struggles with staying on task during independent work is taught to use a self-monitoring system. The student sets a timer for every 10 minutes and checks off a box on a chart if they were on-task when the timer goes off. By recording their behavior, the student becomes more aware of when they are focused and when they are off-task, which helps increase on-task behavior over time.
