Paired Choice Preference Assessment

Paired Choice (Forced Choice) Preference Assessment is a method used to identify a learner’s preferences by presenting them with two items at a time. The learner is then asked to choose between the two, and the item they select is recorded. By repeating this process with various item pairs, a therapist can determine which items are most preferred by the learner.

Example

A therapist presents a child with a toy car and a ball. The child selects the toy car. The therapist records this choice and continues to present different combinations of items, such as a ball and a book or a toy car and a stuffed animal. After several trials, the therapist can analyze the data to see which item was chosen most frequently, indicating the child’s strongest preference.
