Intraverbal

Definition

An intraverbal is a verbal operant where a speaker responds to another speaker’s verbal behavior, such as answering a question or filling in the blanks. The response is not directly prompted by any stimuli but by the verbal behavior itself. This is a critical component of conversational language skills.

Example

If someone asks, “What is your favorite color?” and the learner responds, “Blue,” this is an intraverbal. The stimulus was the question, and the answer is verbal behavior not prompted by any visible stimuli, like a color chart.
