Stimulus Prompt

A stimulus prompt is a type of prompt that involves modifying the stimulus or environment to make the correct response more obvious or likely. Stimulus prompts help learners identify the correct behavior by altering or emphasizing specific features of the stimuli. These prompts are gradually faded out as the learner becomes more independent in responding correctly.

Example

When teaching a student to identify numbers, the teacher places a larger, brightly colored number “3” alongside smaller, neutral-colored numbers. The larger size and color make the number “3” more noticeable, increasing the likelihood that the student will select the correct number. As the student learns, the teacher gradually decreases the size and brightness of the “3” until all numbers look the same and the student can still correctly identify it.
