Definition
Behaviorism is a branch of behavior analysis that focuses on understanding behavior through the lens of observable actions, while avoiding assumptions about internal states like thoughts or feelings. It examines the philosophical, theoretical, and historical foundations of behavior, emphasizing the idea that all behavior is learned through interactions with the environment and can be measured and modified using scientific methods.
Example
A behaviorist working in a school might observe that a student often leaves their seat during class. Instead of assuming the student is bored or frustrated, the behaviorist focuses on the observable behavior (leaving the seat) and its relationship with the environment (classroom demands, teacher attention). The behaviorist then implements a reinforcement strategy to encourage the student to remain seated, based on the principles of behaviorism that modify behavior through environmental changes.
