Least-to-Most Prompt (LTM) Fading

Definition

Least-to-Most Prompt (LTM) Fading is a teaching method where minimal prompting is used initially to encourage independent responding. If the learner does not respond or makes an error, increasingly more intrusive prompts are provided to assist them in completing the task.

Example

A teacher asks a student to write their name. At first, the teacher waits to see if the student begins writing independently. If the student hesitates, the teacher gives a verbal reminder. If more assistance is needed, the teacher points to the first letter of the student’s name. Finally, if necessary, the teacher physically guides the student’s hand to begin writing the letters.
